Bridging the Digital Divide

Bridging the Digital Divide for African Communities in Seattle & King County- Digital Access
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and deepened the digital divide, particularly for African immigrant and refugee communities in Seattle and King County. As daily life shifted online—from remote work and virtual schooling to telehealth and essential services—many families faced barriers to internet access, digital skills, and technology resources, limiting their ability to adapt and thrive.

Addressing the Digital Gap Through the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)

To combat these challenges, we actively supported the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), an initiative providing low-cost internet access, digital tools, and training to underserved communities. Our mission was to ensure that every individual had the skills and resources to navigate a digital world, especially during a time when connectivity was a lifeline.

Empowering Communities Through Digital Literacy

During the pandemic, we launched workshops, information sessions, and direct training across King County to:

Raise awareness about ACP benefits – Helping families and businesses enroll in affordable internet programs.
Teach essential digital skills – Equipping job seekers, students, and small business owners with online tools for career growth and economic resilience.
Connect individuals to public resources – Promoting free digital services offered by the Seattle Public Library, community centers, and workforce organizations.
Collaborate with local partners – Working alongside libraries, advocacy groups, and government agencies to bridge the digital divide.

Why Digital Equity Matters

The pandemic reinforced that internet access is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. Key groups impacted included:

📌 Job Seekers – Needed reliable internet and digital literacy to access employment and training opportunities.
📌 Small Business Owners – Required online tools to sustain and grow businesses during economic uncertainty.
📌 Students & Families – Relied on virtual classrooms, yet many lacked internet access or digital devices at home.
📌 Seniors & Healthcare Access – Depended on telehealth and online medical services for essential care.

Ongoing Commitment to Digital Inclusion

Even as we move beyond the immediate impacts of COVID-19, digital access remains a critical issue. We continue to advocate for long-term investments in digital equity, broadband expansion, and technology education to ensure African communities in King County remain connected and empowered.
